H Y S T E R O S A L P I N G O G R A M

I’ve been counting days again.

In ten the doctor will ask if I’ve taken a pain killer
before she shoots the dye into my uterus.
The technician will sit at her station and
watch the dark blue fluid fill me up.
The moment it is released is an explosion
of ink –
an indigo cloud uncurling itself, reaching
its fingers out to the borders
of a fetal waterworld
shaped like an inverted pear.

I think of an octopus releasing dye to obscure
                a predator’s vision,
here, used to uncover what can’t be seen.

I tense, a trapped cephalopod, wanting to make its escape,
struggling to experience this violence as beautiful.

I Can Make Life, Nicole Breit’s debut poetry collection, chronicles the poet’s long journey to give birth to her son — and to find peace. The collection explores the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual impact of fertility treatments, pregnancy, miscarriage, and birth. It was a finalist for the 2012 Mary Ballard Poetry Prize, and has been hailed by poet Laisha Rosnau as “devastating and beautiful…a gorgeous memoir in verse”.

Oops – to answer the first question: I know several people who are going through infertility. Unfortunately, I can’t really say how I’ve helped in any way or specifically supported them, other than just to listen. It isn’t something that anyone really wants to talk about much and the subject is rarely brought up. Knowing others who have struggled (and continue to do so) with infertility, I’m curious to read this author’s story!

My husband & I struggled for three years with infertility. With the help of IVF + ICSI, we now have ten month-old twin boys. I coped by reading infertility blogs, books and a lot of prayer. It also helped to talk to others who went through our same struggle.

If you’re living through infertility, what is your best coping mechanism?

I am not 100% sure I’ve found it yet, but I like to write, it’s cathartic. I like to cry – again, cathartic. And, as strange as it sounds, I like to give my friends baby (my Goddaughter) cuddles!
